Emergence of biodiversity research and main progress from Ifremer ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Daniel; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Research needs and interests on biodiversity have drastically increased since the Rio Conference (1992). The main conclusions from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2001) carried out by the UN and the demonstration of the critical role of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystems services have strengthened research interests on biodiversity. Moreover, the systemic approach generalization, complex system modeling, confluence of thematic prompting new scientific concepts, and multi-scalar – multifunctional approach have induced significant changes to the scientific context. A review of major advances on biodiversity monitoring and research resulting from Ifremer programs will be presented considering deep sea as well as coastal ecosystems and associated...

Empirical modelling of the growth of Ruditapes philippinarum by means of non linear regression on factorial coordinates ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Bacher, Cedric.
In order to highlight the main factors accounting for the growth of clams in Marennes Oleron Bay, three locations were investigated in 1984-1985. First, factor analysis provided information on fluctuations of the environment. Second, principal components analysis was used to study ecological phenomena. The main axes explained the growth rate, which was included in an allometric model. Its properties were then studied by means of sensitivity analysis.

In order to better understand the chronic summer mortality striking the Marennes Oléron Bay since 1988, a research program has been developed since 1994 in association with the professional sector. This study comprises the monitoring, from March to October 1997, of a homogeneous oyster population cultivated on-bottom and off-bottom on 15 working sites. One of these sites is equipped with a multiparameter probe and a valvometer. Measures are taken on an on-going basis on the working site.

Goulletquer, Philippe; Heral, Maurice.

Lapegue, Sylvie; Thiriot Quievreux, Catherine; Mccombie, Helen; Heurtebise, Serge; Boudry, Pierre; Robert, Stephane; Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Gerard, Andre.

European flat oyster - Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Beaumont, A.; Boudry, Pierre; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, a native of Europe, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and in the whole Mediterranean Basin; It has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. Natural populations are also observed in eastern North America, from Maine to Rhode Island, following intentional introductions in the 1940s and 1950s. The species was also introduced in Canada for aquaculture purpose 30 years ago and some populations naturalised in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. These stocks were imported from naturalised populations in Maine whose ancestors originated in the Netherlands.

Eutrophication in a tropical pond: Understanding the bacterioplankton and phytoplankton dynamics during a vibriosis outbreak using flow cytometric analyses ArchiMer
Lucas, Ronan; Courties, C.; Herbland, Alain; Goulletquer, Philippe; Marteau, Anne-laure; Lemonnier, Hugues.
In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4...

Evaluation of oyster sampling efficiency of patent tongs and an oyster dredge ArchiMer
Chai, Ai-ling; Homer, Mark; Tsai, Chu-fa; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Sampling efficiency of two oyster fishing gears, patent tongs and an oyster dredge, were compared in reference to diver-harvested quadrats in Chesapeake Bay, which supports important harvests of eastern oyster Crassosrrea virginica. Mean densities of spat (0$35 mm), small oysters (>35 mm to 75 mm), marketable oysters (>75 mm), and all oysters (three size-groups combined) estimated from patent tong samples were not significantly different from those derived from diver-harvested quadrat samples. In contrast, the densities estimated from dredge samples were low, only 2-32% of the diver estimates. Accordingly, patent tongs are recommended as the sampling gear for estimating eastern oyster stock abundance in the Maryland portion of Chesapeake Bay.

Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe.
This ecophysiological study was conducted on the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), in May 1992. Measurements were achieved using natural food conditions on three different days (a, b, c) at different tide levels (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). Total particulate matter was continuously monitored with a micro-computer and a turbidimeter probe. The "consumption" function was calculated using a new formula allowing for particulate leakage prior to the pre-ingestive particle sorting. This particle leakage represents a passive loss of particles flowing through the branchial filter. Comparisons of the consumption and absorption rates of organic matter and chlorophyll a showed significant differences between seston...

Robert, Stephane; Razet, Daniel; Goulletquer, Philippe; Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Le Moine, Olivier; Faury, Nicole; Mineur, Frederic; Seugnet, Jean-luc.

Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Boromthanarat, Wilaiwan; Razet, Daniel; Garnier, Jacqueline; Prou, Jean; Barille, Laurent.
The study of cultivated ecosystems, once the trophic capacity ha! been determined and the molluscan stocks estimated, requires a knowledge of the evolution of the seasonal consumption of food by molluscs in natural conditions. For Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus edulis, Cerastoderma edule, Ruditapes philippinarum, the amount and quality of food have no effect on the filtration rate, except for the high load of mineraI seston. First an increase of the filtration rate was shown for Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule at the end of winter and beginning of spring. Moreover Crassostrea gigas and Ruditapes philippinarum have shown no increase or only a small summer one. This evolution did not seem to be linked with the environmental conditions (temperature,...

Fluctuating asymmetry and mortality in cultured oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in Marennes-Oleron basin ArchiMer
Frechette, Marcel; Goulletquer, Philippe; Daigle, Gaétan.
Japanese cupped oysters suffer summer mortality in many culture sites along the French Atlantic coast. To ascertain whether mortality might be associated with morphological features of the shells, we estimated fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of hatchery/nursery-produced oysters kept in culture bags in the intertidal. FA is defined as random variations from a perfect symmetry plane (bilateral or radial) in some morphological trait. FA increases with disruption of homeostasy during ontogeny and has both genetic and environmental determinants. We found significant differences in FA between dead and live oysters in two of our three study groups. Therefore, lack of developmental stability may be involved in the summer mortality syndrome of oysters. We also found...

Gestion des bassins conchylicoles ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The excess of farmed mollusc biomass in some French shellfish-farming basins (Marennes-Oléron basin, Isle of Ré, Isle of Bourgneuf) has been clearly highlighted. This manifests itself as a decrease of growth consistency of the molluscs and an increase in chronic mortality rates not linked to pathogenic agents. To this excess of farmed biomass are added the biomass of oysters or "wild" mussels or biomass linked to abandoned concessions.

Goulletquer, Philippe; Heral, Maurice.
The nutritional capacity of an oyster culture basin relies on the nutrient input, as well as the hydrodynamic which conditions the time of residence of the masses of water enabling the development of the phytoplankton. This limited amount of food has to be shared between the different natural populations and the cultivated ones (oysters or mussels). The total amount of these biomasses has to be controlled so as not to exceed the capacity limit.

Growth and survival rates of carpet shell clam (Tapes decussatus Linnaeus, 1758) using various culture methods in Sufa (Homa) Lagoon, Izmir, Turkey ArchiMer
Serdar, Serpil; Lok, Aynur; Kose, Aysun; Yildiz, Harun; Acarli, Sefa; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The carpet shell clam (Tapes decussatus Linnaeus, 1758) is a candidate species for aquaculture development in Turkish waters. Our study aimed to assess the efficiency of three different methods (i.e., net, box and fenced ground) to maximize clam production. Two different net materials (hard plastic net and polyamide net) were tested in the net method trials. Conducted over 1 year between October 2001 and October 2002, an initial calibrated clam population, characterized by a 26.25 ± 0.035 mm shell length and 3.85 ± 0.06 g total wet weight was sampled on a monthly basis to carry out the experiments. By the end of the rearing cycle, clams reached 34.13 ± 0.38 mm and 9.09 ± 0.27 g in shell length and total wet weight, respectively. Significant differences in...

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and Black Mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Linnaeus, 1758) Culture in Izmir Bay (Iskele-Urla)-Turkey: Preliminary Results on the Annual Feeding Cycle Using a Qualitative Approach ArchiMer
Lok, Aynur; Metin, Gulnur; Acarli, Sefa; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Considering the filtration capacity of mussels to qualitative particle selection, our study focused directly on ingested species by assessing mussel stomach content of various size classes (1-5 cm) over a year (August 97-June 98) rather than monitoring seawater samples. Different size of mussels (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cm in length) was sampled monthly from the sides of fish cage floats in Urla-Izmir. Stomach contents were analyzed under microscope and different plankton species were grouped taxonomically. Bacillariophycea, Dinophyceae, Oxyphceae, Euglenophyceae as phytoplanktonic species were observed in the stomach contents of mussels as well as zooplanktonic species including Ciliata, Cladocera, Copepod, bivalve and gastropod larvae. Over the sampling period,...
